Read on descript.com/pricing and Descript's help centre on 1 November 2026, in US dollars. Media hours count imported or recorded media processed in Descript. Creator and Business are billed for each team member. Annual billing is the option the page shows first. If its page has changed since, it is the authority.

Is Descript free?

Yes, Descript has a free plan, and it lists no free trial of a paid plan. Its pricing page, read on 3 November 2026, puts Free at $0 with 60 media minutes (1 hour) a month, 100 AI credits once rather than each month, exports at 720p and no watermark-free video export. Create clips, where its AI picks the moments, is marked Limited on Free.

No free trial listed

Neither Descript's pricing page nor the index of its help centre mentioned a free trial of Hobbyist, Creator or Business on 3 November 2026. What its refund policy offers instead: a plan can be refunded within 48 hours of the invoice date.

What runs out on Free

The hour of media is counted each month, and by Descript's help page on media minutes and AI credits, unused minutes do not roll over. The 100 AI credits come once, so the AI tools, Create clips among them, stop when they are spent.

When you would pay

Watermark-free export starts on Hobbyist, which its pricing page lists with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month and 1080p export. Hobbyist was $24 a month billed monthly, or $16 billed annually, when we read the prices on 1 November 2026 (the table above).

Read on descript.com/pricing (the plan cards and the feature table) and help.descript.com (its index, "Track and understand your media minutes and AI credits" and "Refund policy") on 3 November 2026, signed out. If Descript's pages have changed since, they are the authority. We recheck them by 3 December 2026.

On Burncaps: Free: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark, no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card. Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions; Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once. The video is never uploaded, and subtitle files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes.

What each plan gives for clips and captions

Create Clips

Descript's help centre describes Create Clips as pulling shorter, shareable clips out of a project in one click: its AI picks the moments (its pricing page credits its AI assistant, Underlord), you choose how many, set their length and, if you like, a layout, and they land in a new composition. It is listed as limited on Free and included from Hobbyist. On current plans it spends AI credits, and Descript does not publish how many a clip run costs.

Two ceilings, not one

Media hours cap how much you can bring in each month, and AI credits cap the AI work done on it. You can count the first in advance from the length of your recordings. You cannot count the second, because the cost of a clip run is not published, so a busy month can stop at the credits before the hours.

Captions and the watermark

Descript transcribes what you import, and its captions come from that transcript. On Free, video exports are 720p and carry a Descript watermark, by its help centre. Hobbyist removes the watermark and exports in 1080p; Creator and Business export in 4K.

What clips cost on Descript, by hours of recordings

40 hoursBusiness, $65Business, $50$29
20 hours, two editorsCreator for two people, $70Creator for two people, $48$29, ten devices signed in at once

Descript's figures are the cheapest plan whose media hours cover the recordings, per person, read 1 November 2026; Create Clips also spends AI credits at a rate Descript does not publish. Burncaps Captions + Clips has no minute meter: each recording can be up to three hours, and the only hours counted are those of our speech service (20 in any 30 days, used on a phone unless you switch it off, or on a computer only if you choose it); English on a computer is heard on your own device without a limit. Clip finding has a safety limit for any 30 days, as on every plan. Burncaps' price shows in your currency; Descript's are its US-dollar list prices.

Why it pays: if two people clip five weekly shows, about 20 hours a month, Descript Creator for both is $70 a month billed monthly, before any AI credits run out. Burncaps Captions + Clips does the clips and captions of the same hours for $29 a month, with up to ten devices signed in at once for you and the people you work with.

When Descript is the right buy

Descript is an editor first. You cut video by editing its transcript like a document, which for interviews and podcasts is often quicker than a timeline. It records, and it transcribes several speakers on separate tracks on every plan. Paid plans add voice clones and stock AI voices, so a fluffed word can be retyped rather than recorded again, and its sound clean-up and AI co-editor sit in the same app.

If you cut whole episodes, fix mistakes, mix the sound and want clips as a by-product, Descript does all of it in one place, and a clip tool like ours does not. In that case the plan to pick is the one whose media hours cover your month: Hobbyist up to 10 hours, Creator up to 30, Business up to 40, each per person.

The cheaper route if you only need clips and captions

If your episode is already edited, or you record somewhere else and only want ranked, captioned vertical clips, or captions burned into the whole video, you are paying for an editor you will not use. Burncaps does just those two jobs, in your browser, without uploading the video.

Clips: Captions + Clips

Drop a recording up to three hours and Burncaps gives back about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each cut to 9:16 on whoever is talking, with captions and ums removed. Free exports up to 3 clips from each of 2 videos every 30 days; Captions + Clips, $29 a month, exports every clip, unlimited.

Captioned videos only: Captions

If all you need is animated word-by-word captions burned into your videos, Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once with no subscription, and has no clips: unlimited captioned videos, 60 caption styles, your own or a client's logo and up to ten brand presets.

What it does not do

Burncaps does not record, edit a whole episode, mix sound, edit several tracks or clone a voice. If you need those, Descript is the better buy, and our Descript alternative page sets out where each one stops.

Questions, answered plainly

How much does Descript cost?

As its pricing page stated on 1 November 2026, per person: Free, $0; Hobbyist, $24 a month billed monthly or $16 a month billed annually; Creator, $35 or $24; Business, $65 or $50; Enterprise, priced on request. Hobbyist includes 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month, Creator 30 hours and 800 credits, Business 40 hours and 1,500 credits.

Is Descript free?

It has a free plan with no card: 1 media hour a month, 100 AI credits once, exports at 720p, and a Descript watermark on video exports. Create Clips is listed as limited on Free. Watermark-free export starts on Hobbyist, $24 a month billed monthly (descript.com/pricing and its help centre, read 1 November 2026).

What is the difference between Descript Hobbyist and Creator?

Creator triples the media hours (30 a month against 10), doubles the AI credits (800 against 400), exports in 4K instead of 1080p, and can be shared by up to 3 people, each paying for a seat. Hobbyist is one person. Billed monthly, Hobbyist is $24 and Creator $35 a person (read 1 November 2026).

Does Descript's Create Clips use AI credits?

Yes. Descript's help centre says that on current plans Create Clips uses AI credits, and it does not publish how many a clip run costs. Its AI picks the moments; you choose how many clips you want and how long they are, and they land in a new composition to edit or export (read 1 November 2026).

Is there a cheaper alternative to Descript for clips and captions?

If you do not need Descript's editor, yes. Burncaps Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips from recordings up to three hours each, with no minute meter (the only hours counted are those of our speech service, 20 in any 30 days, and English on a computer is heard on your own device without a limit), and up to ten devices signed in at once. Captions, for captioned videos without clips, is $9.98 a month or $49 once. Free gives 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no sign-up; the 7-day Captions + Clips trial needs no card, and the video is never uploaded.

Does Descript have a free trial?

Not one that its own pages listed on 3 November 2026. Its pricing page offers a free plan instead (60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits once, exports at 720p, no watermark-free video export), and neither that page nor the index of its help centre mentioned a trial of a paid plan. Its refund policy allows a plan refund within 48 hours of the invoice date. Burncaps has a 7-day Captions + Clips trial that needs no card.

Burncaps facts, checked 1 November 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips.

SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes; a longer recording, up to three hours, gives its script and those files (the first ten minutes free, all of it as one of your free videos, in the trial or with Captions + Clips or Captions) and its clips (every one found and shown before you sign up; up to 3 from each free video exported free, every one in the trial or with Captions + Clips).

Clips: about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each showing the words it opens and ends on and the reason it was chosen; each cut to 9:16 with ums and dead air removed, an opening card and captions, framed on whoever is talking. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Captions + Clips export every clip, unlimited.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 59 languages, 60 caption styles.
