A Clipchamp alternative for animated word-by-word captions

Clipchamp is a fair free choice: unlimited exports up to 1080p with no watermark and free auto captions, once you sign in with a Microsoft account. Burncaps does a different caption job: 20 animated styles where each word lights up as it is said, no account, and the video never leaves your browser. Free to use: two videos every 30 days with no mark, or $49 once for unlimited videos.

What Clipchamp is good at

Free, with no watermark

Clipchamp's free plan gives unlimited exports up to 1080p with no watermark, and AI subtitles, voiceovers and silence removal, for anyone with a personal Microsoft account.

A full editor

A timeline with free stock media, filters and effects. Premium, part of Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, adds 4K exports, premium stock and a brand kit.

Subtitle files

Clipchamp's autocaptions give an SRT file you can download, with one spoken language per video.

Where Clipchamp stops, if you only need captions

How the captions look

Its autocaptions help page describes fonts, colours, preset positions, bold, italics, outlines and shadows. It says nothing about lighting each word as it is said.

The sound goes to Microsoft

To make captions, Clipchamp sends the video's audio to Azure Cognitive Services, Microsoft's help page says, adding that no person hears it. Its pages do not say whether the video itself leaves your computer.

An account first

Clipchamp starts with signing in with a personal Microsoft account, or a work account in its work version.

Clipchamp read on clipchamp.com/en/pricing and Microsoft's help page "How to use autocaptions in Clipchamp" (support.microsoft.com) on 14 October 2026. If either page has changed since, it is the authority.

When to keep using Clipchamp

You make many videos for free

If plainer captions are enough and you export a lot, Clipchamp's free plan costs nothing and adds no watermark. Burncaps is free for two videos every 30 days.

You edit whole videos

Joining clips, stock footage, filters and voiceovers on a timeline are Clipchamp's job. Burncaps captions one recording, or cuts its best 30 or 60 seconds.

Your workplace runs on Microsoft 365

Clipchamp's work version comes with some Microsoft 365 business and education licences, so it may already be approved where you work.

How Burncaps does the caption job

It listens on your device

Drop an MP4 or MOV of up to ten minutes. The speech model runs in your browser, so the video never leaves your device. On a phone, or for a language other than English, you can choose our speech service instead, which gets only the sound.

You correct the words

The transcript opens as a script under the video. Click a word to fix it, and one click fixes it everywhere it was heard. Choose one to six words at a time, the position, the size and the text and highlight colours.

It burns the captions in

Pick one of 20 animated styles, where each word lights up as it is said, and export one MP4. Or ask for the best 30 or 60 seconds, cut to 9:16 and framed on your face. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes.

What it costs

Free to use: two videos every 30 days with no mark, or $49 once for unlimited videos. Pro is not a subscription, and the free videos need no account.

Questions, answered plainly

Is Clipchamp free with no watermark?

Yes. As read on clipchamp.com on 14 October 2026, Clipchamp's free plan exports up to 1080p with no watermark and includes AI subtitles, once you sign in with a personal Microsoft account. Premium, with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, adds 4K, premium stock and a brand kit.

Why use Burncaps if Clipchamp is free?

For animated word-by-word captions, where each word lights up as it is said, in 20 styles; for no account; and for a video that never leaves your browser. Burncaps also cuts the best 30 or 60 seconds of a talking video. Free to use: two videos every 30 days with no mark, or $49 once for unlimited videos.

Does Clipchamp upload my video?

For autocaptions, Clipchamp sends the audio to Microsoft's Azure speech service, its help page says. Its pricing page lists content backup on OneDrive on both plans, and does not say whether the video itself leaves your computer.

Is my video uploaded with Burncaps?

No. The video opens in your browser and never leaves your device. The sound leaves only if you choose our speech service, and then only the sound, in short pieces, never the picture. The transcript text leaves only for the optional best-moment pick, name check or translation, and ticking Keep everything on this device stops that.

What does Pro add?

Pro is a single payment of $49, not a subscription, for unlimited videos with no mark. Every video, free or Pro, gets every style and the max-accuracy model; without Pro, two videos are free every 30 days with no mark, and subtitle files are free without limit for videos up to ten minutes.

Burncaps facts, checked 14 October 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or cuts it to its best 30 or 60 seconds.

Price: free with every feature, for two videos every 30 days with no mark; Pro, $49 once, gives unlimited videos with no mark. Pro is not a subscription.

Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound leaves only if you choose our speech service.

Files: MP4 or MOV up to ten minutes in; an MP4 with the captions burned in out. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes. A longer recording, up to 90 minutes on a computer, gives its script and those files: the first ten minutes free, all of it with Pro.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 37 languages, 20 caption styles.

After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
