A YouTube clip maker for Shorts from your own videos

Burncaps works from a video file, not a YouTube link: your own recording, or a video you have the right to use. It finds the best moments, cuts each into a captioned 1080 x 1920 clip ready for Shorts, and never uploads the video. Free: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips.

First, the video file

Your original recording

The file from your camera, your recorder or your editor's export is the best start: it has every pixel you shot, so a vertical clip framed on your face stays sharp.

Your own upload, from YouTube Studio

In YouTube Studio, open Content, choose the video, open its menu and choose Download. YouTube's help says the file is an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on the video's size, and one video can be downloaded up to five times in 24 hours (read 2 November 2026).

Someone else's video

Only a file you have the right to use: a client's video you clip for them, or one whose owner or licence allows it. Burncaps does not fetch videos from YouTube or any other site, and takes no links.

YouTube's help also says a video removed from YouTube, with a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, or using a pre-approved audio track cannot be downloaded from Captions + Clips. A 720p download cut to 9:16 is enlarged, so its clips are a little softer than clips from the original recording.

From one YouTube video to ranked Shorts

1. Drop the file

MP4 or MOV, up to three hours and 10 GB, on a phone or a computer. Burncaps listens and writes the whole script, and you can correct any word, one click changing it everywhere.

2. Pick from the ranked clips

About one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, best first, the ones we would post first circled. Each starts where a thought starts and ends where the speaker finished the point, and shows the reason it was chosen.

3. Export for Shorts

Each clip comes out as a 1080 x 1920 MP4, framed on whoever is talking, with ums and dead air cut, word-by-word captions in any of 60 styles and an opening card. Check your captions clear the Shorts buttons with our free safe zone checker.

YouTube's own Clip button is something else

YouTube's Clips feature lets viewers share a part of a video between 5 and 60 seconds long as a public link that plays on YouTube (YouTube Help, read 2 November 2026). It does not give you a vertical, captioned file of your own to post as a Short. A clip maker for Shorts does a different job: it finds the moments worth posting in your long video and cuts each into its own 9:16 video, which you upload as a new Short.

What it costs

Free: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark and no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card. Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions, or Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once, captions only.

Why Captions + Clips pays for a channel: one 30-minute video gives about 15 clips, so a weekly upload is a Short a day and more. The free plan keeps three a video; Captions + Clips keeps every one and counts no minutes of video.

What it does not do

Burncaps does not take YouTube links, download from YouTube, post to your channel or schedule Shorts. It cuts clips from a video file you already have, each from one stretch of it, and gives them back as files for you to upload. It reads what is said, so it suits talking videos, interviews, lessons and podcasts, not gameplay or music.

Questions, answered plainly

Can I paste a YouTube link?

No. Burncaps works from a video file on your own device and never uploads it, and it does not download from YouTube. Use your original recording, or for a video on your own channel, download it from YouTube Studio and drop the file.

How do I download my own video from YouTube?

In YouTube Studio, open Content, choose the video, open its menu and choose Download. YouTube's help says the file is an MP4 at 720p or 360p depending on the video's size, that one video can be downloaded up to five times in 24 hours, and that a video removed from YouTube, with a strike or using a pre-approved audio track cannot be downloaded (read 2 November 2026). Your original recording, if you still have it, gives sharper clips.

Can I make clips from someone else's YouTube video?

Only from a file you have the right to use: your own video, a client's video you are clipping for them, or a video whose owner or licence allows it. Burncaps does not fetch videos from YouTube or any other site.

What size are the clips?

Each clip is a 1080 x 1920 MP4, 9:16 for Shorts, 30 seconds to two minutes of speech, with captions burned in and an opening card. A wide video is framed on whoever is talking, so a 720p download cut to vertical is enlarged and a little softer than a clip from your original recording.

Is it free?

Yes: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, with no watermark and no sign-up. For every clip of every video, try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card; then Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions, or Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once, captions only.

Does Burncaps upload my video?

No. The picture and the export are made in your browser. The sound goes to our speech service only on a phone unless you switch it off, or on a computer if you choose it, and the transcript text goes to Claude only to find clips, check names or translate, never the video. Ticking Keep everything on this device stops that too.

Burncaps facts, checked 2 November 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips.

Price: free for 2 videos every 30 days, each one recording with its captioned video and up to 3 clips, no mark and no sign-up; then the free 7-day Captions + Clips trial, no card (your email only); then Captions + Clips, $29 a month, gives unlimited clips and captioned videos, or Captions, $9.98 a month or $49 once, gives unlimited captioned videos. Captions paid once is not a subscription.

Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound goes only to our speech service, on a phone unless you switch it off, on a computer only if you choose it. Because the video never reaches us, we cannot keep it or train AI on it, and we train no AI on anything you make.

Files: MP4 or MOV in, MP4 out. Captions on the whole video: up to ten minutes. Clips: up to three hours, on a phone or a computer. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes; a longer recording, up to three hours, gives its script and those files (the first ten minutes free, all of it in the trial or on either paid plan).

Clips: about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each showing the words it opens and ends on and the reason it was chosen; each cut to 9:16 with ums and dead air removed, an opening card and captions, framed on whoever is talking. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Captions + Clips export every clip, unlimited.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 59 languages, 60 caption styles.

After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
