Text to SRT converter
Paste text or drop a .txt file and get an SRT subtitle file, split into readable captions and timed by reading speed. It is made in this page, on your device, with no sign-up.
Times as 0:05, 1:30 or 00:01:30,500.
Paste or type text, or drop a .txt file, and the SRT appears here.
These times are estimated from reading speed, not heard from a voice, so they will not follow the speech in a video exactly.
Have the video? Time it to the voice
Burncaps listens to your video or recording and times every word to the voice, then gives you SRT, VTT, ASS or text files, or burns the captions into the video. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes. The video never leaves your browser.
Free to use: two videos every 30 days with no mark, or $49 once for unlimited videos.
How the text becomes captions
Split where you pause
Each sentence ends a caption. A sentence too long for one caption breaks at a comma, colon, semicolon or dash, then between words, never inside one. A blank line always starts a new caption, and short sentences that fit on one line share it.
Lines that read evenly
Up to 42 characters a line and two lines a caption by default, the limits in Netflix's English subtitle guide. The two lines are balanced so neither is much longer than the other.
Timed to be read
Each caption stays up for its length at 17 characters a second, never under 1.2 seconds or over seven, with a short gap between captions. Or give a total length and the text is shared out across it.
What this converter cannot do
It has no sound to listen to. The times are a reading estimate, so if your text was spoken in a video, the captions will run ahead of the speaker in some places and behind in others. For subtitles that follow the voice, give Burncaps the video or the recording: it hears every word and times it, and you can correct any word before you save the file.
Questions, answered plainly
How do I convert a TXT file to SRT?
Drop the .txt file on this page or paste its text into the box. The SRT appears beside it at once, split into captions and timed. Change the line length, lines per caption or reading speed if you need to, then press Download .srt.
Will the subtitles match the speech in my video?
Not exactly. This converter has no sound to listen to, so it estimates each caption's time from how long the text takes to read, or spreads the text over the total length you give. To time each word to the voice, Burncaps listens to the video itself.
How are the captions split?
At the end of each sentence first, then at commas, colons, semicolons and dashes, then between words, never inside a word. A blank line in your text always starts a new caption. Lines are balanced so the two lines of a caption are of similar length.
What line length and reading speed should I use?
The defaults are 42 characters a line, two lines a caption and 17 characters a second. Netflix's English subtitle guide allows 42 characters a line and up to 20 characters a second for adult programmes, 17 for children's. For vertical video, shorter lines of about 30 characters read better.
Does it work with other languages?
Yes. The file is UTF-8, so accented letters, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese and every other script come through as typed, and right to left text stays in its order. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, written without spaces, may be split between any two characters; use a shorter line for them, about 16 characters.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The SRT is made by this page on your device and your text is never sent anywhere. The page sends only anonymous step counts, such as that a file was downloaded, never the text (see the privacy policy).

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or cuts it to its best 30 or 60 seconds.
Price: free with every feature, for two videos every 30 days with no mark; Pro, $49 once, gives unlimited videos with no mark. Pro is not a subscription.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 37 languages, 20 caption styles.
After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
