MP4 to SRT in three steps

Drop the MP4

MP4, MOV or M4V, from a phone, a camera or a screen recorder. The page reads the sound out of the file on your device, and the picture never goes anywhere. Up to ten minutes and 1.2 GB on a computer, 250 MB on a phone.

Check the words

Every word is timed as it is heard and opens as a script under the video. Click a word to correct it: one click fixes the same word everywhere it was heard, and this browser remembers the names you fixed.

Download the SRT

Choose how many words each caption holds, one to six words at a time, then click SRT. VTT, ASS and plain text are one click away, and so is the same video with the captions burned in.

What the SRT file holds

An SRT file is plain text: a number for each caption, its start and end time to the thousandth of a second (00:00:04,120 --> 00:00:05,360), then the words. Burncaps starts a new caption at the end of a sentence, after a pause of about a second, or when it reaches the number of words you chose, so each line follows the way you speak instead of cutting a thought in half.

Free to use: two videos every 30 days with no mark, or $49 once for unlimited videos. Subtitle files are free without limit for videos up to ten minutes, with no account, and downloading them never uses one of your free videos.

Questions, answered plainly

How do I convert MP4 to SRT for free?

Drop the MP4 on this page or on burncaps.app, wait while it listens, check the words in the script, then click SRT. There is no account and no sign-up. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for videos up to ten minutes.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is opened in your browser and never leaves your device; the only large download is the speech model, once (about 190 MB with a graphics chip, 80 MB without, then cached). The sound leaves only if you choose our speech service, which a phone offers for speed and a computer offers for a language other than English: then it goes in short pieces to Microsoft's MAI-Transcribe in the EU, never the picture, and nothing is kept. You can check all of this in your browser's network tab.

Can I convert an MP4 longer than ten minutes?

Yes, on a computer: a recording up to 90 minutes and 10 GB (MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3 or WAV) gives its script and subtitle files. Without Pro the first ten minutes are free, and Pro, $49 once, does the whole recording. On a phone the limit is ten minutes and 250 MB.

Can I get the SRT in another language?

Yes. Choose a caption language and the lines are translated into any of the 37 languages before you download. Only the transcript text goes to our AI for the translation, never the video or the sound, and ticking Keep everything on this device stops it.

Does the SRT have word-level timing?

SRT times each caption, not each word: a caption starts with its first word and ends with its last. If you need every word's time, download ASS, which carries each word's timing as karaoke tags, or burn the captions into the video, where every word lights up as it is said.

Burncaps facts, checked 13 October 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or cuts it to its best 30 or 60 seconds.

Price: free with every feature, for two videos every 30 days with no mark; Pro, $49 once, gives unlimited videos with no mark. Pro is not a subscription.

Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound leaves only if you choose our speech service.

Files: MP4 or MOV up to ten minutes in; an MP4 with the captions burned in out. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes. A longer recording, up to 90 minutes on a computer, gives its script and those files: the first ten minutes free, all of it with Pro.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 37 languages, 20 caption styles.

After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
