SRT to VTT converter, free: SRT, VTT, SBV and TXT, both ways

A free subtitle converter: drop or paste an SRT, VTT, SBV, ASS or text file and download it as SRT, VTT, SBV or TXT. It is converted in this page, on your device: the file never leaves your browser and there is no sign-up.

Drop a subtitle file, or click to choose
SRT, VTT, SBV, ASS or TXT. Or paste it below.

Paste subtitles or drop a file, and the converted file appears here.

Have the video but no subtitles? Make them from the video itself

Burncaps listens to your video or recording and times every word to the voice, then gives you SRT, VTT, ASS or text files, or burns the captions into the video. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes. The video never leaves your browser.

Free: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark, no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card. Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions; Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once.

What it reads, what it writes

FormatReadsWritesWhat carries over
SRT (SubRip, .srt)YesYesWords, times, italics, bold and underline. Font colours and {\an8} positions are left out.
VTT (WebVTT, .vtt)YesYesWords, times, italics, bold and underline. Cue settings (line, position, size, align), regions, styles, notes, voice and class tags are left out.
SBV (SubViewer, .sbv)YesYesWords and times. YouTube reads no styling in SBV, so none is written.
TXT (.txt)Yes, with a time at the start of each line, like [00:01:05] or 1:05, or with noneYes, one caption a line, with or without its start timeWords; with times, the start of each caption to the second. Text with no times is timed by reading speed.
ASS and SSA (.ass, .ssa)YesNoWords, times, italics, bold and underline. Override codes, drawings and comment lines are left out.

What it fixes on the way

Messy files read

A byte order mark, Windows or old Mac line ends, no empty line between captions, missing caption numbers, a full stop instead of a comma before the milliseconds, and one or two digits of milliseconds instead of three.

Order and gaps

Captions out of order are put in time order, empty captions are left out, a caption that ends before it starts is given its reading time, and every caption is numbered again from 1. The page tells you each change it made.

Every file in UTF-8

Files in UTF-16, or in the old Western European encoding (Windows-1252), where other tools show é as a box or a question mark, are read as they were meant, and the new file is always UTF-8, which YouTube and Vimeo ask for.

What this converter does not do

It does not translate, shift or stretch the times, sync captions to a video, or split long lines again: the words and times come out as they went in. To shift, sync or edit the times and words, use the free SRT editor. It reads only the formats in the table: no TTML, no SCC, no subtitles stored as pictures, and no MicroDVD files, which count video frames rather than time. For subtitles timed to the voice, give Burncaps the video itself: it hears every word and times it, you can correct any word, and it can translate the captions into 59 languages. The main Burncaps tool makes subtitles from a video; it does not open an existing subtitle file.

Questions, answered plainly

How do I convert SRT to VTT?

Drop the .srt file on this page or paste its text into the box. To VTT is chosen for you when the file is SRT, and the VTT file appears beside it at once: the WEBVTT line is added, the commas before the milliseconds become full stops and the caption numbers go. Press Download .vtt.

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Drop or paste the .vtt file and To SRT is chosen for you. The header, notes, styles and cue settings are left out, the captions are numbered from 1, the full stops before the milliseconds become commas, and italics, bold and underline are kept. Press Download .srt.

How do I convert an SBV file from YouTube to SRT?

Drop or paste the .sbv file and press Download .srt. SBV is the SubViewer format: each caption's start and end on one line, split by a comma, with no number. The converter writes SBV too, and YouTube takes both SRT and SBV files.

Can I turn an SRT file into plain text?

Yes. Choose To TXT and you get every caption on its own line, with no numbers or times, ready for a transcript or show notes. Tick the box to put each caption's start time before it, like [00:01:05].

Does it keep italics, colours and positions?

Italics, bold and underline are kept between SRT and VTT. Positions, colours, fonts and VTT styles are left out, because SRT has no standard way to hold them, and SBV and text hold no styling at all. The page says what was left out of each file.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

SRT is the simpler: numbered captions with a comma before the milliseconds. VTT starts with the line WEBVTT, uses a full stop, needs no numbers and can hold positions and styles. Web browsers play VTT, not SRT. The SRT file format guide on this site sets out every difference.

Is my subtitle file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted by this page on your device and is never sent anywhere. The page sends only anonymous step counts, such as that a file was downloaded, never the file or its text (see the privacy policy).

Burncaps facts, checked 2 November 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips.

Price: free for 2 videos every 30 days, each one recording with its captioned video and up to 3 clips, no mark and no sign-up; then the free 7-day Captions + Clips trial, no card (your email only); then Captions + Clips, $29 a month, gives unlimited clips and captioned videos, or Captions, $9.98 a month or $49 once, gives unlimited captioned videos. Captions paid once is not a subscription.

Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound goes only to our speech service, on a phone unless you switch it off, on a computer only if you choose it. Because the video never reaches us, we cannot keep it or train AI on it, and we train no AI on anything you make.

Files: MP4 or MOV in, MP4 out. Captions on the whole video: up to ten minutes. Clips: up to three hours, on a phone or a computer. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes; a longer recording, up to three hours, gives its script and those files (the first ten minutes free, all of it as one of your free videos, in the trial or with Captions + Clips or Captions) and its clips (every one found and shown before you sign up; up to 3 from each free video exported free, every one in the trial or with Captions + Clips).

Clips: about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each showing the words it opens and ends on and the reason it was chosen; each cut to 9:16 with ums and dead air removed, an opening card and captions, framed on whoever is talking. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Captions + Clips export every clip, unlimited.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 59 languages, 60 caption styles.

After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
