Subtitles for long videos, up to 90 minutes

Lectures, sermons, podcasts, webinars and interviews: on a computer, Burncaps writes the script and the subtitle files of a recording up to 90 minutes and 10 GB. The first ten minutes are free, and Pro, $49 once, does the whole recording. The video is never uploaded.

How a 90-minute recording is handled

Only the sound is read

The page reads the sound out of the file a slice at a time and keeps it as 16 kHz mono, so a 10 GB camera file costs time to read, not memory. The picture stays where it is, on your device, and the page shows how much it has read.

The first ten minutes, free

Without Pro, it listens to the first ten minutes, ending at the last pause in their final minute rather than in the middle of a word. The script and every subtitle file hold that part, free and with no account.

The rest with Pro

With Pro on the device, the whole recording is heard. Sign in to Pro after the free part and Listen to the rest carries on from where it stopped, without dropping the file again, while the script grows as it is heard.

Why burned-in video stops at ten minutes

Writing a new video means your browser holds the file in memory while it encodes, and a longer recording is more than many computers can hold at once. Subtitle files need only the sound, which is why a long recording gets them and not a burned-in copy. That is the same with Pro and without. We have no date for burned-in video past ten minutes.

Our speech service on a long recording

Listening on your computer has no limit and keeps the sound on it; a long recording just takes longer that way. Our speech service, if you choose it, has an allowance of sound in any 30 days: 25 minutes without Pro, five hours with Pro. When a Pro recording needs more than is left, the page says so before any sound is sent, and offers to listen on the computer instead wherever a model in the browser writes that language.

What it costs

Free to use: two videos every 30 days with no mark, or $49 once for unlimited videos. Subtitle files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes, and the first ten minutes of a longer one are free; Pro does the whole of a recording up to 90 minutes. Pro is one payment, not a subscription.

Questions, answered plainly

How long a video can I subtitle?

On a computer, a recording up to 90 minutes and 10 GB gives its script and its SRT, VTT, ASS and text files. On a phone, recordings up to ten minutes and 250 MB.

Is it free for a long video?

The first ten minutes of a long recording are free, with no account. Pro, $49 once, does the whole recording, up to 90 minutes. Recordings up to ten minutes get their subtitle files free without limit.

Can I burn captions into a video longer than ten minutes?

Not today. Video with captions burned in, and the best 30 or 60 seconds, work on recordings up to ten minutes, with Pro and without. Writing a new video means your browser holds the file in memory while it encodes, and a longer recording is more than many computers can hold at once. Subtitle files need only the sound. We have no date for burned-in video past ten minutes.

Which files work over ten minutes?

MP4, MOV, M4A, MP3 and WAV files with AAC, MP3 or plain sound in them. A recording in another format, or one with another kind of sound, can be saved as one of these first, or trimmed to ten minutes.

How long does a long recording take?

It depends on your computer and the language. The page shows how much of the sound it has read, the script grows as it is heard, and the page asks the browser to keep the screen awake while it listens. Keep the tab open: a long recording is not kept in the browser, so a closed tab means dropping the file again.

Is a long video uploaded?

No. The video never leaves your device; only its sound is read, a slice at a time, in your browser. The sound leaves only if you choose our speech service, in pieces of up to 30 seconds with nothing from the picture, to Microsoft's MAI-Transcribe in Ireland, and nothing is kept.
