TikTok video size, dimensions and aspect ratio

TikTok takes vertical or landscape videos, and its Creator Academy says 720p or higher when you upload in TikTok Studio on a computer, read on 3 November 2026. Its advert specs recommend vertical 9:16 at 540 x 960 or more. TikTok prints no pixel size for an ordinary post: a vertical 9:16 video at 1080 x 1920 meets every figure above. Drop your video to see its size and what TikTok makes of it; it opens on this device and is never uploaded.

TikTok's sizes, from its own pages

TikTok's help centre has no page of sizes for an ordinary post (its Creating videos section had none on 3 November 2026), so every figure below is from another page of TikTok's own: the Creator Academy, the page for developers whose apps post videos, and the specs for In-Feed adverts. Each is linked and was read on 3 November 2026. Lengths are on video length limits, and what the buttons cover on the safe zone checker.

The Creator Academy's articles open inside its own page, which is why the links above go to it; the article each line comes from is named under the link. TikTok changes these. We read every page again each month and change the dates together; the next check is by 3 December 2026.

Where TikTok's pages differ, and what they leave out

File size: the Creator Academy says up to 10 GB in TikTok Studio on a computer; the page for apps that post says up to 4 GB; the advert specs say up to 500 MB. Each is for its own way of posting.

A pixel size for an ordinary post: none of TikTok's pages we read gives one. 1080 x 1920 is 9:16, the shape its advert specs recommend, at 1080p, the Creator Rewards Program's floor, and well inside the 360 to 4096 pixels its API takes.

A square or 4:5 post: the Creator Academy names vertical and landscape, and the advert specs take square; no page we read says how an ordinary square or 4:5 post is shown in the feed, so the checker marks it as taken, with a catch.

Make a video TikTok-sized in Burncaps

Burncaps turns a wide or square video vertical in your browser and burns word-by-word captions in, or none if you choose No captions. The video never leaves your device.

Shape in BurncapsSize on a computerOn TikTok
Vertical 9:161080 x 1920The shape TikTok recommends for adverts, at 1080p
Square 1:11080 x 1080Taken by its advert specs; not full screen
Portrait 4:51080 x 1350Vertical, not 9:16

A whole video, up to ten minutes and 1.2 GB: open More, then Shape, and choose Vertical 9:16. Follow me finds your face and keeps it in the frame like a calm camera operator; Fixed holds the frame where you drag it; Fit everything keeps the whole wide picture and fills above and below with a blurred copy of it. Every second is kept. A phone may write a smaller size to fit its memory.

A longer recording, up to three hours: Burncaps finds the moments worth posting and cuts each into a 9:16 clip of up to 3 minutes, framed on whoever is talking, with ums cut and long pauses shortened. Long video to Shorts explains how the clips are chosen.

Free: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark, no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card. Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions; Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once.

The same video on Instagram and YouTube Shorts

Instagram Reels: any shape from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 720 pixels and 30 frames a second, so a 9:16 TikTok is also a Reel. The figures are on Instagram Reel size.

YouTube Shorts: square or vertical, up to three minutes, uploaded at up to 1080p. The figures are on YouTube Shorts size.

Questions, answered plainly

What are the TikTok video dimensions?

TikTok prints no pixel size for an ordinary post. Its Creator Academy says it takes vertical or landscape videos at 720p or higher when you upload in TikTok Studio on a computer, and its advert specs recommend vertical 9:16 at 540 x 960 or more. A vertical 9:16 video at 1080 x 1920 meets all of these, and the 1080p the Creator Rewards Program asks for. Read on 3 November 2026.

What aspect ratio is a TikTok video?

TikTok recommends vertical 9:16 for its In-Feed adverts, which also take horizontal 16:9 and square 1:1. For ordinary posts its Creator Academy says to upload vertical or landscape videos, and that a horizontal video shows a View full screen button, so there is no need to add black margins.

What resolution should a TikTok video be?

720p or higher when you upload in TikTok Studio on a computer, by TikTok's Creator Academy, and 1080p or higher for videos in the Creator Rewards Program. Apps that post through TikTok's own API can send 360 to 4096 pixels on each side.

What video format does TikTok take?

TikTok's page for apps that post lists MP4 (recommended), WebM and MOV, with H.264 video recommended, at 23 to 60 frames a second. Its In-Feed advert specs list .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp and .avi. Read on 3 November 2026.

Can I post a horizontal video on TikTok?

Yes. TikTok's Creator Academy says TikTok is not only for vertical videos: an uploaded horizontal video shows a View full screen button, as long as it is truly landscape, with no text in black margins.

Is my video uploaded to check its size?

No. The page reads the width, height and length from the video file in your browser, on your own device, and the file is never sent anywhere, which you can see in your browser's network tab on a computer. The page sends only anonymous step counts, such as that the page was opened, never anything from the file (see the privacy policy).

How do I make a video 9:16 for TikTok?

Drop it into Burncaps, then under More choose Shape and Vertical 9:16, and choose how the frame is set: Follow me, Fixed or Fit everything. A whole video up to ten minutes keeps every second; a longer recording, up to three hours, becomes 9:16 clips of up to 3 minutes each. Free is 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark, no sign-up.

Burncaps facts, checked 3 November 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips.

Price: free for 2 videos every 30 days, each one recording with its captioned video and up to 3 clips, no mark and no sign-up; then the free 7-day Captions + Clips trial, no card (your email only); then Captions + Clips, $29 a month, gives unlimited clips and captioned videos, or Captions, $9.98 a month or $49 once, gives unlimited captioned videos. Captions paid once is not a subscription.

Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound goes only to our speech service, on a phone unless you switch it off, on a computer only if you choose it. Because the video never reaches us, we cannot keep it or train AI on it, and we train no AI on anything you make.

Files: MP4 or MOV in, MP4 out. Captions on the whole video: up to ten minutes. Clips: up to three hours, on a phone or a computer. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes; a longer recording, up to three hours, gives its script and those files (the first ten minutes free, all of it as one of your free videos, in the trial or with Captions + Clips or Captions) and its clips (every one found and shown before you sign up; up to 3 from each free video exported free, every one in the trial or with Captions + Clips).

Clips: about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each showing the words it opens and ends on and the reason it was chosen; each cut to 9:16 with ums and dead air removed, an opening card and captions, framed on whoever is talking. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Captions + Clips export every clip, unlimited.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 59 languages, 60 caption styles.

After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
