Blur video background free, in your browser
Drop a talking video and Burncaps blurs the room behind you, or puts a studio backdrop, any colour, your own picture or a green screen there instead. It finds you in every frame inside your browser, on a phone or a computer, so the video is never uploaded to us. Free for 2 videos every 30 days, with no watermark and no sign-up.
The video never leaves your browser. On a computer, the sound is heard on your own device unless you choose our speech service; on a phone, it goes to our speech service unless you keep it on the phone. The service gets short pieces of sound, never the picture.
- Video never uploaded
- Free, no sign-up
- No watermark
Live preview of the captions, rendered on this page by the same engine that burns your video. The background needs a person in shot, so it shows on your own video.
How to blur the background of a video
Five steps, with no account, on a phone or a computer. The background is set for the whole video, from the first second to the last.
- Drop the video. An MP4 or MOV of someone talking, up to ten minutes and 1.2 GB, straight from a phone or a camera. It opens in this page and is never uploaded to us.
- Let it listen. Burncaps writes down every word, for captions you can keep or leave out.
- Open More, then Background. Choose Soft blur for a room gently out of focus, or Blur for a room well out of focus. The preview shows it at once.
- Keep the captions, or not. Pick one of 60 caption styles under Style, or choose No captions to change only the background.
- Export. You get a new MP4 with the background in the picture, ready for any app or editor.
Before it changes anything, Burncaps checks that a person is in shot. If it finds none, the editor says: “No person was found in the frame, so the background stays as recorded.”
Every background you can choose
The same list on a phone and a computer, under More, then Background. The words in quotation marks are the editor's own.
| Background | What it does |
|---|---|
| As recorded | “Nothing changed but the captions.” The room stays as you filmed it; a first video starts here. |
| Soft blur | “Your room, gently out of focus.” |
| Blur | “Your room, well out of focus, so you stand out.” |
| Black, grey or white studio, or deep blue | “You, cut out and lit on a studio backdrop.” Each backdrop is lighter in the middle and darker at the edges, like a lit studio wall. |
| A colour of your choice | Any colour from the colour picker, lit the same way as the studio backdrops. |
| Your own picture | A JPG or PNG behind you. “It stays on this device.” |
| Green screen | “Pure chroma green (#00FF00) behind you, ready to key out in CapCut, Premiere, Final Cut or DaVinci. The captions stay in front of whatever you put behind you.” Where a caption style uses green itself, that green is swapped for another colour, so keying leaves your words in place. |
How it finds you, and where it stops
In each frame, a person segmentation model from Google's MediaPipe, running in your browser, marks which pixels are you. Everything else is the room, and that is what is blurred or replaced. The edge is smoothed from frame to frame, so a strand of hair or the edge of a shoulder flickers less, and a closer look is taken around the head, where hair meets the room.
What it does not do
It is made for one person talking: it keeps the person whose face it finds, and someone standing apart from them may be blurred with the room. It does not blur a face, a number plate or a chosen part of the frame; it keeps the person sharp and changes what is behind them. Filling the edges of a vertical frame with a blurred copy of the video is a different setting, Fit everything under Shape: horizontal video to vertical. A video with no one in shot keeps its background. Clips keep the room as filmed, and a recording over ten minutes keeps its background as recorded. If the models cannot load, for example on a network that blocks them, the background stays as recorded too.
Where your video goes
The video stays in your browser. On a computer, English is heard on your own device unless you choose our speech service, which is also offered for other languages and for recordings over ten minutes; on a phone the sound goes to our speech service unless you keep it on the phone. The service gets short pieces of sound, never the picture, and passes them to Microsoft's speech recognition in the EU, which by Microsoft's terms for the service stores none of it. The script's text leaves your device only if you type names to spell right, choose a translation or choose Clips (it then goes to our AI); ticking Keep everything on this device stops that.
The models that find you come to your browser as plain file downloads, from jsDelivr or from burncaps.app, and run on your device; nothing of the picture goes the other way. Every request the page can make, and how to check them in a computer browser's network tab.
Captions in the same export, or clips from a long talk
The export that blurs the room can also burn in animated word-by-word captions, timed to the voice, in 60 styles, so one file is ready for Reels, TikTok or Shorts. From a podcast, a stream or a talk, Burncaps finds the moments worth posting and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips, which keep the room as filmed. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Captions + Clips export every clip, unlimited.
What it costs
Free: 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark, no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card. Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions; Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once.
Questions, answered plainly
How do I blur the background of a video for free?
Drop the video, an MP4 or MOV up to ten minutes, on this page. When the editor opens, go to More, then Background, and choose Soft blur or Blur; the preview shows it at once. Then export a new MP4. Free is 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark, no sign-up.
Can I blur the background without adding captions?
Yes. Under Style, choose No captions. The export then changes only the background behind you and adds no words to the picture.
Can I replace the background instead of blurring it?
Yes. Besides Soft blur and Blur there are four studio backdrops (black, grey, white and deep blue), a colour of your choice, your own picture (a JPG or PNG that stays on your device) and a pure #00FF00 green screen to key out in your editor.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Burncaps runs in the browser on a phone as on a computer, with the same backgrounds, and the picture is worked on in the phone's own browser. On a phone the sound goes to our speech service, for the captions, unless you keep it on the phone.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Burncaps opens the video in your browser and never receives it. On a computer, the sound is heard on your own device unless you choose our speech service; on a phone it goes to our speech service unless you keep it on the phone (short pieces of sound, never the picture, to Microsoft's speech recognition in the EU, which by Microsoft's terms for the service stores none of it).
How long can the video be?
Up to ten minutes and 1.2 GB for a background. A video over ten minutes, up to three hours, opens on its clips and keeps its background as recorded; clips always keep the room as filmed.
Can it blur a face or a number plate?
No. It does the opposite job: it keeps the person talking sharp and blurs or replaces everything behind them. It does not blur a chosen part of the frame.
What if two people are in the shot?
It is made for one person talking. It keeps the person whose face it finds; someone standing apart from them may be blurred with the room. If it finds no person at all, the background stays as recorded and the editor says so.
