An AI clipping tool that never uploads your video

Cloud clippers such as OpusClip, Vizard and Klap upload your whole recording to their servers before they look for a clip. Burncaps finds the best moments, frames each one on whoever is talking, cuts the ums and burns in the captions inside your own browser, so the video never leaves your device. Do not take that on trust: this page shows what does leave, and how to check it yourself.

Where each part of the clipping happens

Turning a long recording into clips is seven jobs. Here is where each one runs, and what, if anything, leaves your device while it does.

Where the sound and the words can go, exactly

On a computer, English is heard on the device unless you ask for our speech service. For another language, a recording over ten minutes, or when the computer is listening slower than the video plays, the page asks before any sound leaves. A phone sends the sound to our speech service with no question first, says so in one line above the video, and keeps it on the phone from then on if you tap Keep the sound on this phone. With the service, each piece goes as 16 kHz mono sound to burncaps.app/api/listen, and our server passes it to Microsoft's MAI-Transcribe in Ireland, which by Microsoft's statement keeps none of it; neither do we. To rank the clips, the transcript text, with each line's timing, the pauses and a word for how the voice moved, plus a random browser ID, goes to burncaps.app/api/pick and on to Anthropic's Claude, whose commercial terms say Anthropic "may not train models on Customer Content"; we do not store it. B-roll, with Pro or its free trial and only when you press Add B-roll, sends that clip's words the same way, and your browser then fetches the stock shots from Pixabay's own server. Exporting makes one small check with a random ID for your browser and one for the file, never anything from the video. Ticking Keep everything on this device stops every request that carries sound or words, and a simple rule on your device then chooses the clips: runs of whole sentences of about a minute.

What an upload costs you before the first clip

A cloud clipper cannot look for a clip until the whole file has arrived. A one-hour 1080p recording at 8 Mbit/s is about 3.6 GB; over a 20 Mbit/s upload, that is about 24 minutes of uploading first, and then the recording lives on someone else's servers for as long as their terms say. Burncaps starts listening the moment you drop the file. Measured on a 2020 MacBook with 8 GB of memory, 90 minutes of English were heard on the device in 8.8 minutes (5 October 2026), and on the transcript of a 110-minute interview the clip finder returned 30 ranked clips in 103 seconds (1 November 2026).

From each tool's own terms, privacy policy and help pages, read 2 November 2026. We are not the only tool that keeps a video on the device: some desktop editors do too. Burncaps does it in a browser, so it runs on Windows, a Mac, a Chromebook or a phone with nothing to install.

How to check it yourself, in about half a minute

1. Open the Network tab

In Chrome or Edge on a computer, press F12 (Cmd, Option and I on a Mac) and choose Network. Tick Preserve log, because a video dropped on this page opens in the editor on the front page. Then drop a recording and choose Clips.

2. Read what goes out

Choose Fetch/XHR. The requests to burncaps.app are a few kilobytes, and clicking one and opening Payload shows what it carries: a step name, a random ID or the transcript text, never your file. The large rows are downloads coming in, such as the speech model, about 190 MB with a graphics chip or 80 MB without, once.

3. Read the page's own lock

Click the first row, the page itself, and open Headers. Its Content-Security-Policy, under connect-src, names the only addresses the page's code may connect to: burncaps.app, jsDelivr, Hugging Face, Pixabay's media server and Cloudflare's visit counter (blob: and data: are memory inside your browser). The browser refuses every other address.

Who this is for

Client work and recordings under an NDA, unreleased episodes and paid courses, interviews with people who did not agree to a third party holding the footage, and anyone on a slow or capped connection who would rather not send gigabytes before the first clip. Whether keeping the video on your device meets the terms of an agreement is for you to judge: the table and the checks on this page show you exactly what leaves.

Questions, answered plainly

Is there an AI clipping tool that doesn't upload my video?

Yes. Burncaps finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips, and the video is opened, framed, cut, captioned and written as new MP4s inside your browser, so it never reaches our servers. What can leave is smaller: the transcript text, so our AI can rank the clips, and the sound, only if our speech service writes the words (on a phone unless you switch it off, on a computer only if you choose it). Ticking Keep everything on this device keeps both on it.

What leaves my device when Burncaps makes clips?

Never the video. To rank the clips, the transcript text goes to our AI service with each line's timing and the pauses, and it is not stored; Anthropic's commercial terms say it may not train models on that content. The sound goes only to our speech service, in pieces of up to 30 seconds with nothing from the picture. Exporting makes one small check with a random ID for your browser and one for the file. Step counts carry no identifier; PostHog, our analytics service, gets the same steps, page views, clicks and, outside the European Economic Area, a recording of how the page changed with your video, your words and your typing left out, under a code that changes every day.

Can it make clips with no sound or words leaving my device?

Yes. Tick Keep everything on this device: the sound is heard on your device, and a simple rule on it chooses the clips, runs of whole sentences of about a minute, instead of our AI ranking them. Framing, cutting and captions work as usual, and exporting still makes its one small check with two random IDs. Untick it for the AI to find and rank the best moments.

How can I check that it does not upload my video?

Open your browser's developer tools, choose Network and tick Preserve log, then make clips from a recording. The requests going out to burncaps.app are a few kilobytes: a step name, a random ID or the transcript text, never a file the size of your video. The page's Content-Security-Policy header, under connect-src, names the only addresses its code may connect to, and the browser refuses every other one.

How long a recording can it clip?

Up to three hours, on a computer or a phone; on a computer the file is read in place from your disk, up to 10 GB. It gives about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, each framed on whoever is talking, with the ums and dead air cut and captions burned in.

Is it free?

Yes. Free is 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark and no sign-up. Then try Pro free for 7 days, no card. Pro is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions; Starter is $9.98 a month or $49 once. Every clip of a recording is found and shown with no sign-up; a free video exports up to 3 of them, and the trial and Pro export every one, unlimited.

Burncaps facts, checked 6 November 2026

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips.

Price: free for 2 videos every 30 days, each one recording with its captioned video and up to 3 clips, no mark and no sign-up; then the free 7-day Pro trial, no card (your email only); then Pro, $29 a month, gives unlimited clips and captioned videos, or Starter, $9.98 a month or $49 once, gives unlimited captioned videos. Starter paid once is not a subscription.

Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound goes only to our speech service, on a phone unless you switch it off, on a computer only if you choose it. Because the video never reaches us, we cannot keep it or train AI on it, and we train no AI on anything you make.

Files: MP4 or MOV in, MP4 out. Captions on the whole video: up to ten minutes. Clips: up to three hours, on a phone or a computer. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes; a longer recording, up to three hours, gives its script and those files (the first ten minutes free, all of it as one of your free videos, in the trial or with Pro or Starter) and its clips (every one found and shown before you sign up; up to 3 from each free video exported free, every one in the trial or with Pro).

Clips: about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each showing the words it opens and ends on and the reason it was chosen; each cut to 9:16 with ums and dead air removed, an opening card and captions, framed on whoever is talking. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Pro export every clip, unlimited.

Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 59 languages, 60 caption styles.

After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
