How a Japanese video gets English subtitles
1. The Japanese is written out
Drop the video in. Our speech service (Microsoft's MAI-Transcribe, run in the EU) names the language itself and writes what is said. Only the sound goes to it, never the picture, and nothing is kept. Or keep everything on your device with the on-device model.
2. Every line is translated into English
Under Captions in, choose English. Each line is translated by an AI model and laid over the same moments, so the English keeps the word-by-word rhythm of the speech. Correct a Japanese word in the script and only its line is translated again. Translation is free and needs no account.
3. Burn it in, or take the file
Export an MP4 with the English captions burned in, in any of sixty animated styles, or download SRT, VTT or ASS files. One click more makes the same video with Japanese captions too.
How good is the English? Not measured yet
We have not yet run Japanese recordings through a measured test of the speech service and the translator, as we did for six other languages, so we give no figure for Japanese. Translation is done by an AI model, so names, jokes and long compound words can go wrong: read the English once before you publish.
Who this is for
Japanese-speaking creators, teachers and small businesses who want English-speaking viewers, and anyone with a Japanese recording of their own, such as an interview, a lesson or a family video. Burncaps works on a video file on your device and never takes a link, so it cannot subtitle a film or a show on a streaming site. 2 videos every 30 days are free, each with captions and up to 3 clips, with no mark and no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card; after it, Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions, or Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once for unlimited captioned videos.
Questions, answered plainly
Can it translate Japanese audio to English?
Yes. Burncaps hears the Japanese in your video or audio file and writes it out, then under Captions in choose English and every line is translated into English by an AI model, timed to the moments it was said. A video gets the English burned in; an audio file gives SRT, VTT or ASS subtitle files in English. Translation is free and needs no account.
How do I add English subtitles to a Japanese video?
Drop the video into Burncaps. It writes out the Japanese that is spoken, then under Captions in choose English: every line is translated and laid over the same moments, so the English keeps the word-by-word rhythm of the speech. Correct any Japanese word by clicking it and its line is translated again, then export an MP4 with the English burned in, or a subtitle file.
Is the translation free?
Yes. Translating needs no account, and each connection has a generous daily limit against abuse. Exporting is free for 2 videos every 30 days, each with captions and up to 3 clips, no watermark and no sign-up. Then try Captions + Clips free for 7 days, no card. Captions + Clips is $29 a month for unlimited clips and captions; Captions is $9.98 a month or $49 once.
How accurate is the English?
We have not yet run Japanese recordings through a measured test of the speech service and the translator, as we did for six other languages, so we give no figure for Japanese. Translation is done by an AI model, so names, jokes and long compound words can go wrong: read the English once before you publish.
Can I keep the Japanese and add English too?
Yes. After an export the page offers "Also make it with English captions" (or Japanese), and each file is named with its language. Subtitle files (SRT, VTT, ASS) are free without limit for videos up to ten minutes.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. The video never leaves your device. On a computer the speech model runs in your browser. On a phone our speech service writes the words unless you switch it off, and on a computer you can choose it for a language other than English or a closer transcript: the sound goes to it in short pieces, never the picture, and nothing is kept. The transcript text leaves only for Clips (our AI reads it to find the best moments), the name check or a translation, and a tick box keeps everything on your device.

What it is: a browser tool that burns animated word-by-word captions into a talking video, or finds the best moments of a talk, podcast or interview and gives them back as ranked, captioned 9:16 clips.
Price: free for 2 videos every 30 days, each one recording with its captioned video and up to 3 clips, no mark and no sign-up; then the free 7-day Captions + Clips trial, no card (your email only); then Captions + Clips, $29 a month, gives unlimited clips and captioned videos, or Captions, $9.98 a month or $49 once, gives unlimited captioned videos. Captions paid once is not a subscription. Translations are free.
Privacy: the video never leaves your browser. The sound goes only to our speech service, on a phone unless you switch it off, on a computer only if you choose it. Because the video never reaches us, we cannot keep it or train AI on it, and we train no AI on anything you make.
Files: MP4 or MOV in, MP4 out. Captions on the whole video: up to ten minutes. Clips: up to three hours, on a phone or a computer. SRT, VTT, ASS and text files are free without limit for recordings up to ten minutes; a longer recording, up to three hours, gives its script and those files (the first ten minutes free, all of it as one of your free videos, in the trial or with Captions + Clips or Captions) and its clips (every one found and shown before you sign up; up to 3 from each free video exported free, every one in the trial or with Captions + Clips).
Clips: about one clip for every two minutes of talk, up to 30, ranked, the ones we would post first circled, each showing the words it opens and ends on and the reason it was chosen; each cut to 9:16 with ums and dead air removed, an opening card and captions, framed on whoever is talking. Every clip of the whole recording is found and shown, free and with no sign-up; each free video exports up to 3 of them, and the 7-day trial and Captions + Clips export every clip, unlimited.
Languages and styles: captions in the language spoken, twelve Indian languages heard on your device, translation into 59 languages, 60 caption styles.
After it listens: correct any word (one click changes it everywhere), add or cut words, one to six words at a time, position, size, text and highlight colours, and names this browser remembers, all free and without listening again.
